Coward's Way Out Wins Belmont?
California Chrome had a real shot at winning horse racing’s Triple Crown by taking the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, but was instead beaten by Tonalist, and ended up in a tie for fourth place.
You win some, you lose some, right? If you’re Chrome’s owner, Steve Colburn, not so much.
Colburn was not happy about the outcome of the race at all. Not because his horse lost, but because his horse lost to a horse that hadn’t run in the other two Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
He was none too happy, and none too shy to share his opinion after the race. He wants to change the rules so that horses are required to run all three races, to level the playing field, so to speak. “This is a coward’s way out,” he said. “Our horse had a target on his back.”
And the owner had a hair across his backside.
