OPP: Over-Protective Dad

Today’s OPP sends us this letter.

Yi! My dad keeps intimidating my boyfriend. The other day I brought him back to my house for dinner.  We went inside; my dad was sitting on the couch with a baseball bat watching some sort of war channel. I introduced them, but my Dad didn't even look at him. Needless to say, dinner was very awkward. My dad didn't even acknowledge his presence. MY boyfriend tried to keep talking to him, but nothing.  The only words my Dad said was when he left. He said, "Get out." I’m 24 and tired of my dad being such a jerk to guys I date. Someone please help me. How do I get my Dad to stop?!

Slacker and Steve say that she is old enough to date at age 24. They also say it is hard to argue the logic of “it’s my house.” If she really doesn’t like it then she should move out. It is unfortunate that he has this attitude because even if she does move out she will still want her boyfriends or potential husband to meet her father at some point.

What do you think Laurel should do to get her dad to back off?

Dads are a hard egg to crack. He loves her and that is why he can’t stand another man coming into his baby girl’s life but she should let him know how damaging it is becoming to the relationship her father and her share and that it may result in him losing her forever. He may change his tune or at least express the reasoning behind why he acts in this way.
