OPP: Bipolar Roommate

Todays OPP is a young college student that moved back home because money was tight. Now she is ready to go back out on her own again but feels trapped. Her mother is bipolar and has been mentally terrorizing her daily saying how much she loves her and wants her around in one breath to calling her hurtful names and telling her to get out in her next. She has been going crazy because she wants to move on with her life but feels like she would be abandoning her sick mother if she does.

Slacker feels like no matter what his mom did to him he could never abandon her. He also notes that he is not, however, a young college student beginning their life.

Steve admits to some guilt he felt over leaving home to begin his career while his mother was ill. He also knows that his mother wanted him to suceed and it was an important step in his life that needed to be taken. Feeling that this may also be what our OPP needs to do also.

Should she stay for her mom or should she leave for herself? What advice do you have for her?

I  feel like her mother should seek help for herself. It should not ALL fall on the child. She is in a transformation phase in her life and needs the support of her mother not guilt over wanting to create a life for herself. There is plenty that she can do living away from her mother. She does not have to live with her to be there for her.
